History & new beginnings
Since first opening in the early 1980s, the farm has been a vision brought to life by local people seeking to create a green space for community benefit. Many know and love the site as a central and unique asset to Gorgie Dalry and the wider city, having provided work experience, training, and nature-based learning for generations in the heart of Edinburgh.
Following the closure of the city farm in 2023, a new charity was formed to ensure the site remains an accessible community resource – a Community Farm for everyone. We won’t recreate exactly what came before but rather build on the legacy and affection of all who have visited or worked within the farm with a new model of partnerships and collaboration that will sustain this community-led space for many years to come.
Purpose & progress
When we took on the lease in 2025, the site had not been tended for many months and sustained damage through vandalism and fire. Restoration is a massive undertaking, but we are so proud and grateful to all that have helped us make huge inroads already. Thanks to amazing, committed volunteers, in just a year we have restored large parts of the Community Garden, established allotments for local groups and schools, and co-developed a new Medicinal Herb Garden with our partners at Napiers.
As we turn our attention to restoring other areas of the site, we’re delighted to welcome partner organisations whose activities bring learning, wellbeing and community support to the farm. By sharing our space in this way, we’re creating a diverse hub that serves many different people and provides for the farm’s long-term future.
Looking ahead
Our aim is to secure and sustain Gorgie Community Farm through strong partnerships and, by sharing space, generate the income needed to remain a dynamic, collaborative and natural space.
There are many exciting potential projects that we’d love to undertake, including restoring the former café, transforming the fire-damaged stables into flexible activity space, and creating new outdoor play and learning areas for children, families and schools. These projects will only become possible through the continued generosity of volunteers, donors, partners and our wider community.
